Eligibility Criteria for Indian Nationals

Performance in JEE (Main) 2025

Candidates must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (all categories) in the JEE (Main) 2025 B.E./B.Tech. paper.

The percentages of candidates shortlisted for each category are as follows: 10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and the remaining 40.5% is OPEN for all. PwD candidates are eligible for 5% horizontal reservation in each of these five categories.

The table below shows the order in which the top 2,50,000 candidates in various categories will be chosen based on their performance in the JEE (Main) 2025 B.E./B.Tech. paper.

Category-wise distribution of the top 2,50,000 candidates

7SC3562537500
8SC-PwD1875
9ST1781218750
10ST-PwD938

The total number of candidates may be slightly greater than 2,50,000 in the presence of “tied” ranks/scores in any category.

Age Criteria:

Candidates must have been born on or after October 1, 1998. SC, ST, and PwD candidates receive a five-year age relaxation; these candidates must have been born on or after October 1, 1993.

Number of attempts

A candidate may take the JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

Appearance in Class XII (or equivalent) examination

A candidate must have first taken the Class XII (or equivalent) examination in either 2024 or 2025, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects.

Candidates who took Class XII (or equivalent) for the first time in 2021 or earlier are NOT eligible to take JEE (Advanced) 2025, regardless of the combination of subjects attempted/offered.

Note:

By appearing in the Class XII (or equivalent) examination, it is meant that the Board concerned declared the result for that year, regardless of whether or not the examination was held. Even if the outcome of a particular candidate is withheld, it will be considered an appearance.

However, if the Class XII (or equivalent) examination Board declares the results for the academic year 2020-21 on or after October 25, 2021, then candidates from that Board who appeared for their Class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2021 are also eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2025, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria. If the Class XII (or equivalent) examination Board declares the results for the academic year 2020-21 before October 25, 2021, but a particular candidate’s result is withheld, the candidate will be ineligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2025.

Earlier Admission at IITs

A candidate should not have been admitted to an IIT, regardless of whether the candidate continued in the programme or accepted an IIT seat by reporting “online” / at a “reporting centre” in the past. Candidates whose admission to IITs was revoked (for whatever reason) after enrolling in an IIT are also ineligible to take the JEE Advanced 2025.

Candidates admitted to a preparatory course at any of the IITs for the first time in 2025 are eligible to take JEE Advanced in 2025.

Candidates who were assigned a seat in an IIT through JoSAA 2025 but did not report “online” / at any “reporting centre” OR withdrew before the last round of seat allotment OR had their seat cancelled (for whatever reason) before the last round of seat allotment for IITs are eligible to take JEE Advanced 2025.
