Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has been designated by the Ministry of Education (previously the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD)) to supervise, manage, and speed up the admissions process and make it more effective, transparent, and efficient. The joint seat allocation is used for admissions to 114 institutes for the upcoming academic year. In order to give students access to all of their educational programs, institutes will use JoSAA Counselling 2024. The participating institutions are 33 Other-Government Technical institutes, 26 IIITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, and 23 IITs (other GFTIs).

JOSAA Counselling 2024
JoSAA counseling is conducted with six rounds of seat distribution. Eligible applicants must submit their JoSAA counseling applications on the official website, https://josaa.nic.in/. Moreover, JEE Main and/or JEE Advanced qualifiers may participate in JoSAA Counselling. Candidates can choose from the three options of "freeze," "float," or "slide" if they are given a seat in the JoSAA Counseling rounds. Candidates are given seats based on their qualifications, preferences, and the availability of seats. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority will publish the complete schedule for JoSAA Counseling on the site (JoSAA).

JoSAA Counselling Process
Detailed steps for the JoSAA Counselling are as follows;
Step 1 Registration:
In order to participate in JoSAA Counselling Process, eligible candidate should register themselves on the JoSAA Couselling website https://josaa.nic.in/ with following credentials
- JEE (Main) Application Number and password for candidates who have appeared in JEE (Main).
- JEE (Main) Application Number and password for candidates eligible through “one-time measure” and did not appear in JEE (Main).
- JEE (Advanced) login-id and password for foreign nationals who did not appear in JEE (Main).
After logging in with the provided credentials, candidates are asked to fill out personal and academic information such as name, age, gender, qualification, and other specifics.
After filling out the necessary information, candidates can proceed to the choice-filling process.
Step 2 Choice Filling
- Candidates should carefully order the academic programs when filling out the choices, keeping in mind that only those choices would be used to determine seat allocation.
- Candidates are given a 10-day window to fill in their choices which include 2 mock seat allocations. This 10-day window will NOT be extended under any circumstances.
- Candidates have 10 days to make their selections, which includes 2 2 mock seat allocations. This 10-day period will NOT be prolonged in any way.
- Candidate must prioritize their choices in order of preferred courses/institutes, choosing only those academic programs from the choices that they are willing to enroll in.
Step 3 Choice Locking
- Candidates must "lock" their choices on or before the final day of choice filling after selecting their preferred colleges and academic programs.
- If candidates don't lock their choices, the most recent choices saved will be locked automatically when the selection deadline arrives.
- The choices made by a candidate cannot be changed once they have been locked. before the choice-filling deadline, candidates may edit their selections by first submitting a request to unlock in the online JoSAA portal. The registered mobile and email will receive an OTP that can be used to verify the unlock request. The candidate's options will become available after being verified.
Steps 4 Seat Allotment and Seat Acceptance:
- The candidate is in responsible of logging into the JoSAA portal and verifying whether a seat has been assigned in a specific round of seat allocation.
- If the candidate is given a seat, they must complete "Online Reporting" before the last date or time allotted for the given round—the round in which the seat is allocated—in order to accept the seat.
- Once all of the documents have been verified, the assigned seat will either be confirmed or canceled. To accept a seat that has been allotted to them, a candidate must download the "Initial Seat Allotment Intimation Slip" and follow the instructions.
Step A Accept the Seat: The candidate must accept the seat offered and choose one of the following options for the academic program for the next round: "Freeze," "Slide," or "Float"
Step B Upload the documents: The candidate must upload each of the necessary documents listed on the JoSAA Portal.
Step C : Pay the Seat Acceptance Fee:
- To be eligible for a seat in the IITs or NIT+ system, a candidate MUST pay the seat acceptance fee and complete the entire JoSAA process.
- If the candidate does not pay the seat acceptance fee, the documents they have uploaded cannot be verified. The admission fee is distinct from the seat acceptance fee and varies by institute and candidate category.
Step 5: Document Verification:
Students must get their documentation verified in this step in accordance with the schedule. Verification of the documents will be done online. Students won't be permitted to report to the designated location for final admission until all of their documentation has been verified.
Step 6: Reporting the college:
The final step is for applicants to report at the designated institute to pay the balance due as well as complete any remaining admissions requirements.
Options on Seats Allotted in JoSAA Counselling
Floating: Candidates must choose this option if they want to accept the assigned seat but are also open to advancement and admission to more desirable institutions or programs.
Freezing: If a candidate is content with the seat they have been assigned and does not want to take part in any additional rounds of counseling, they must Freezing this option.
Sliding: Candidates who select the sliding option will be notified of their allotment but will also be eligible to enroll in a higher-level preferred course at the same institution.
Steps to check JoSAA Seat Allotment Result?
The seat allocation results for each round will be posted on the website in accordance with the schedule. Candidates can view the seat allocation results by logging into the system.
Step 1 -Visit the JoSAA counselling official website.
Step 2 - Select the seat allocation link.
Step 3 - Enter your password and JEE Main 2024 roll number to log in.
Step 4 - Click on the “Submit” button
Step 5 - The provisional JoSAA 2024 seat allotment letter will be shown after a successful login.
Step 6 - Download the JoSAA 2024 allotment letter and print it out.
JoSAA Mock Allotment 2024
The JoSAA mock allotment results will be made available on the organization's website by the authorities. The JoSAA 2024 mock allocation will be held by the exam authority to assist applicants in learning their chances of admission into their desired colleges. If the colleges as well as courses chosen during the mock allocation are unsatisfactory, the candidates may change their order preferences accordingly.The JoSAA allotment is not final, so the applicants will be given sufficient time to alter their preference's order as needed.
JoSAA Counselling Fees
Before accepting the seats allotted by JoSAA Counseling, candidates must pay a Partial Admission Fee (PAF). The details for PAF for various categories are given below;

JoSAA Counselling for Foreign Nationals and PIOs
Foreign Nationals (FN) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) can also participate in the JoSAA counselling process for admission to these institutes. Foreign Nationals and PIOs who have appeared in the JEE Advanced examination and meet the minimum eligibility criteria are eligible to participate in the JoSAA counselling process.
Foreign Nationals and PIOs who meet the eligibility criteria and have appeared in the JEE Advanced examination can participate in the JoSAA counselling process for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other participating institutions.
JoSAA Counselling for Supernumerary Seats
Supernumerary seats are additional seats that are created over and above the regular seats, and are meant to provide admission to candidates who belong to certain reserved categories or have specific requirements. Candidates who belong to specific categories such as foreign nationals, Persons with Disabilities (PwD), or children of defense personnel, may be eligible for the supernumerary seats. The eligibility criteria may vary depending on the institute offering the seat.

The JoSAA counselling process for Kashmiri migrant candidates follows a similar process to the regular seats, with specific provisions and facilities for the candidates.

They need to select the NRI category and provide relevant details such as their passport number, visa details, and other necessary information.
NRIs are allotted seats in the participating institutes based on the availability of seats and their preferences. The participating institutes have reserved a certain percentage of seats for NRIs.
JoSAA Counselling Reservation Policy
The JoSAA counselling process also takes into account the reservation policy of the Government of India, which is aimed at providing opportunities to students from various categories, including Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD).

JoSAA Counselling For Dual Degree Programs
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is responsible for conducting the centralized counselling process for admission to the dual degree programmes offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other participating institutes. The counselling process is conducted in multiple rounds, and candidates are allotted seats based on their JEE Advanced rank and their preferred choice of institute and programme.
The dual degree programmes offered by the IITs are five-year integrated programmes that lead to both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in a specific field of study. The programmes are designed to provide students with a broad-based education and in-depth knowledge in their chosen field.
JoSAA Counselling Seat Allotment Dual Reporting
If candidates choose the "float" option after the first round of JoSAA seat allotment and are assigned to a different category institute in the second round, assume a candidate was assigned an NIT in the previous round and has now been assigned an IIT then they must go through the JoSAA dual reporting process.
Dual reporting is required for candidates who receive another seat during the subsequent seat allotment and wish to take the later one.
JoSAA Counselling Tie Breaker
There is a provision for seats to be considered supernumerary at the time of JoSAA counseling if multiple students in the same category have the same rank and the number of seats is filled. It will be possible to admit those students by increasing the number of seats available for that specific rank.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is choice filling process?
A. Choice filling is an important part of joint seat allocation process to get admission into IITs, NITs, IIITs and other GFTIs. It will allow you to fill in the choices of institutes and branches in decreasing order of your preference.
Q. I locked my choices but now I would like to make further changes to my choice list. Is that allowed? If yes, how can I exercise the option?
A. By first submitting a request to unlock in the online JoSAA portal, you can change your choices after locking but before the choice-filling deadline. Please refer to Clause 40 for specific instructions on how to unlock the options.
Q. Will there be any spot round seat allocation at any of the IITs after the completion of the 6th round of seat allocation?
A. No, there will be no spot round of seat allocation at any of the IITs after the completion of the 6th round of seat allocation.
Q. What is locking of choices?
A. Choice Locking is the process of finalizing the submission of choices. Once the choices are locked, it cannot further be changed
Q. Will a candidate be allowed to reshuffle the choice list at any stage of seat allotment?
A. Yes. According to the candidates' priority lists, seats are assigned. Therefore, candidates should rank their preferred institutes and programs in order of preference. Candidates may change their selections on the choice list as many times as they like before the choices are locked.
Q. How many choices one can fill?
A. There is no maximum number of choices you can select from the ones that JoSAA has made available to you.
Q. Can I get both IIT and NIT seats in every round of allotment?
Yes, individuals are able to add IITs and NITs to their list at the same time when filling out the JoSAA choice form.
Q. What is the difference between JoSAA and CSAB?
A. The primary distinction is that, after the conclusion of JoSAA counseling rounds, CSAB conducts two additional special rounds of seat allocation. IITs are not considered by CSAB, but IIITs, NITs, GFTIs, and other colleges are.
Q. Choice filling deadline is already over. Am I allowed to make any changes to my choice list at this point?
A. You will not be allowed to edit your choice list after the deadline for choice filling, i.e., you cannot change the order of your choices, add any more courses, or delete any course from the choice list after the deadline. Please refer to Clause 40 for detailed guidelines.
Q. What is mock seat allocation?
A. The mock seat allocation is based on the choices filled by students. It is not final seat assignment, but only gives you a realistic picture of your chances of being offered a seat.
Q. How does JoSAA 2023 counseling work?
A. There are six rounds of seat distribution during JoSAA counseling. Applications for JoSAA counseling must be submitted on the official website at https://josaa.nic.in/ by eligible applicants. Depending on their qualifications, preferences, and the availability of seats, candidates are assigned seats. If given a seat in the JoSAA counseling rounds, candidates may select from the three options "freeze," "float," or "slide." The full JoSAA counseling schedule will be made available on the website by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).
