IIT Madras Introduces Sports Quota for the First Time in the Country: In a groundbreaking move, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has become the first IIT in the country to initiate the ‘Sports Excellence Admission’ (SEA) for undergraduate programs starting in the academic year 2024-2025. Under this initiative, the institute will offer two additional seats in each UG program for Indian citizens. One seat will be common, while the other will be exclusively for female athletes.
Currently, no IIT in the country has a sports quota, although several universities, including Delhi University, have such provisions. IIT Madras aims to recognize and encourage talented students who excel in sports, providing them with new opportunities. The SEA program seeks to motivate eligible students to pursue higher education by showcasing exceptional performance in their respective sports.
To be eligible for admission through this program, candidates must clear the JEE Advanced exam via the SEA portal operated by IIT Madras, as opposed to the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal used for regular admissions. Applicants must secure a position in the Common Rank List (CRL) or Category-wise Rank List in JEE Advanced and have won at least one medal in a national/international level sports competition in the last four years.
